Ethical Issues
Firstly I would like to say that any views in this piece are purely for research and any offensiveness is not intended.
There are many ethical issues that may arise from representing data. Some are simply from
people's personal opinions, and some are from bias and misrepresented data.
Some ethical issues can arise from religion. For example, a survey that says that there are more christians than muslims could offend muslims, as they might say that it badly represents
muslims, saying that they are smaller or less significant, and while this may not be the sole intention of the creators of the survey, it could interpreted this way.
Further issues could arise where people intentionally misrepresent data (bias data) because of a personal hate or unlike of that religion. This leads to possible legal issues, with the company that this person represents being blamed or simply involved. If the survey or data is put on a website, blog, newspaper or magazine then they could also be involved in any issues that arise.
More issues can arise from race. For example, there might be a comment on a news report saying "It is no doubt these people might be slightly different, but they are certainly very, very skilled" This may be interpreted as they are being told that they different and are being patronised because people don't think they can do well. As everyone knows, racism is against the law and this person, while not intending an harm, might get into trouble. Once again, this can affect the company, the news and the person himself.
Like religion, racism can be from pure bias and distorted data. This can affect the company, website, blogger, news agency or newspaper company.
